Known as Leptospermum Scoparium, the NZ mānuka tea-tree oil consists of three Isoprene chemical building blocks, making it much richer in sesquiterpenes than its much big brother, the kānuka tea-tree.
Having a much shorter lifespan (only 50 years) and being a much shorter tree than kānuka, thus much easier to harvest, the mānuka tree became the traditional "Medicine" tree for the women of the ancient Māori tribes in NZ who used the leaves, flowers and leaf stems for a range of customary Rongoā (medicinal) treatments.
Research published by New Zealand's Cawthron Institute claims that mānuka oil is thirty (30) times more effective than Australian tea-tree oil as a malicious pathogen inhibitor.
HIGH TERPENE, LOW TRIKETONE CONTENT
Both "Tribal" branded "Mānuka" & "Kānuka" tea-tree oil have a very high terpene chemical family content with a very low (close to zero in kānuka) triketone content, a naturally occurring herbicide noted in research undertaken by the Stauffer Chemical Company (1977) to be toxic. The Leptospermone (beta-triketone) chemical compound family is typically found in higher quantities in plants that are distressed. It is produced by the tree, to prevent other plants from invading the trees growth area and smothering the subject tree. Interestingly, triketone has been chemically synthesized and is the primary active in agricultural sprays used to control weed growth.
ITS ABOUT GIVING CONSUMERS ALTERNATIVE CHOICES
The NZ east-coast oil producers market oils with a high triketone content. "Tribal" offers consumers an alternative in the traditional remedies niche of the Complementary & Alternative Medicine, (CAM) sector of the health market. For this reason, "Tribal" branded oils are harvested from NZ tea-trees in areas of NZ that government funded research has shown very high terpene counts and very low triketone counts. Areas like the "Far-North" of NZ (Aotearoa).
The "Tribal" home base.
Mānuka is a unique therapeutic native plant oil niche product within the Complementary & Alternative Medicines (CAM) sector of the larger health market.
A market that US based Long View Research noted in a recent paper, is growing at an Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 23% with a forecast total market value of USD443B by 2026.
